The Reeperbahn is probably the most famous entertainment areas in the world. To the west, located in close proximity to the Port of Hamburg, the Reeperbahn extends well into the borough of Altona. Towards the end of the 19th Century more and more amusement centers were established in St. Pauli, which were located on the outskirts of the "village of poor people" in the city of Hamburg. In simple houses, some in tents, enterprising men and ladies offered their services. Circus, vaudeville, theater and drinking halls and the late taverns soon dominated the city scene. Today's "Spielbudenplatz" was one of those entertainment districts. The "purchase" played an increasingly important role. While within the walls of Hamburg "paid love" with playmates and later whores were banned, more and more citizens and sailors came to have fun in the "suburbs". The Reeperbahn was at that time with its 900 meter length ideal to turn the long ropes to each other in order to produce it ships´ ropes. The craftsmen doing this business were called Reepschläger and the road on which they did their job soon got the name "Reeperbahn". Today, St. Pauli is one of the most vibrant neighborhoods. Culture, entertainment and eroticism are close to each other. The residents are multicultural and come from all professional and social classes. The theater and musical culture experienced a boom of a particular degree. Theater in Hamburg on the Reeperbahn is capitalized. St. Pauli Theater, Theater Schmidt, Schmidt's Tivoli, Imperial Theatre and the powder keg are the leading theaters on the Reeperbahn in Hamburg. Besides the pubs the Hamburg restaurant has also blossomed.
